Yoga for people who think they "can't do yoga"
Spoiler: if you can breathe, you can do yoga.
"I'd love to try yoga, but I can't even touch my toes." I hear this all the time. Many people picture yoga as bendy bodies in perfect poses, and decide it isn't for them before they've even stepped onto a mat.
If that sounds like you, this is for you. Let's clear up a few of the most common worries.
"I'm not flexible enough"
This is the big one. But saying you're not flexible enough for yoga is like saying you're too tired to rest. You don't need flexibility to start. In my Yoga for Stress classes, we move slowly and gently, and every pose can be adapted to suit your body.
"I'm not fit enough"
Yoga for Stress isn't a workout. There's no pushing, sweating through fast sequences or keeping up with anyone. We breathe, move gently and rest properly. The aim is to calm your body down, not wear it out.
"I won't know what I'm doing"
You don't need to. I guide you through everything, step by step, and offer simpler options whenever you need them. Most people in my classes are beginners or haven't practised in years.
"My mind is too busy"
That's exactly why yoga can help. You don't need to empty your mind or sit perfectly still. We use the breath and gentle movement to give your busy mind something simple to focus on. Many people tell me it's the first time all week they've felt their thoughts slow down.
"I'll feel self-conscious"
Completely understandable. My classes are small, welcoming and judgement-free. Everyone is focused on their own experience, and nobody is watching how you do a pose. Wear whatever's comfortable, and rest whenever you need to.
"I have an injury or a body that doesn't do what it used to"
You're very welcome. Let me know before class and I'll suggest ways to adapt the practice for you. Props like blocks, bolsters and blankets help make poses comfortable and supported. If you're unsure, check with your doctor or health professional first.
What a Yoga for Stress class is really like
We start by arriving and settling, with a few slow breaths.
We move gently to release tension in common stress spots, like the neck, shoulders, back and hips.
We finish with a longer rest, so your body has time to soak it all in.
Mats and props are provided. Just bring yourself and wear something comfy.
Come and try it, on me
